The sexual offender register is documentation of reported, arraigned, or convicted cases of sex violations or abuse as defined by the VAPP Act 2015. The register is accessible to members of the public and security agencies. It has data on those convicted available directly on the website while other categories (such as those reported or arraigned but not convicted) can be accessed based on demand.
Any conduct which violates humiliates, or degrades the sexual integrity of any person is termed sexual abuse or violation. This includes sexual assault, exploitation or harassment, and intimidation, s defined in part IV interpretations section 46 of the VAPP Act, 2015. The register will serve as a tool to name and shame those convicted or arraigned or reported. On this platform, you can search for the sexual offense status of a person whether he/she has ever been reported, arraigned or convicted for the crime of sexual violation.
Would-be employers especially those working with vulnerable citizens such as children and young adults are encouraged to carry out background checks for the applicants. What is the Service Provider Register
The service provider register or database is a collation of governmental, non-government, faith-based, voluntary, and charitable associations/ institutions or individuals providing shelter, homes, counseling, legal, financial, vocational, educational, psychosocial, medical, or other assistance to victims and survivors of all forms of domestic and sex-related violence, as captured in the VAPP Act, that is working nationwide in Nigeria. They are registered with appropriate government agencies under the provision of the Law. They have demonstrated the capacity and can show evidence of service provision.
The database is a simple, easy-to-use electronic-based reporting template, which also serves as a communication loop between service providers, the public, NAPTIP, and security agencies. Members of the public can confirm the status of an organization as a service provider and can equally search for and reach them to communicate to their situations that require their intervention.

This register can help to name and shame perpetrators of sexual violence. It will link victims/survivors and even perpetrators to the help they may need. You can take an active part in using this register by asking your children’s school if the management has done background checks on its teachers and other staff. You can carry out background checks and report sexual crimes for investigation etc. You can encourage service providers to register. Our goal is not to fil the register with cases of sexual violence but to hopefully reduce the crime and link affected people to the help they may need.
